Eight dead in Mardan as factory wall collapses

At least eight people including five members of a family were killed and 12 others injured when a factory wall crushed three houses in Mardan district early on Thursday, medics and police said.

Three children were also among the dead. Police said that the incident took place in the Jalat Khan Koorona area on Beini Road, in the town of Par Hoti in Mardan district.

A police official said that the wall of the Tahir Paper Mills collapsed at around midnight, when the residents of the neighbouring houses were asleep. The collapsed wall was around 20 feet high and is suspected to have been damaged in the recent spell of rain in the area.

The dead include five members of a family – a couple and their three children. At least 12 people were rescued by police and locals after hectic rescue efforts.Six of the injured are children and five are women. They were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Mardan, from where they were rushed to Peshawar due to critical nature of their injuries.

Three of the injured are stated to be in critical condition.

There was no police report of the incident at the time this story was filed.
