PESHAWAR: Unidentified assailants shot a doctor in Peshawar on Thursday in what appeared to be a targeted attack.

The armed men opened fire on the vehicle of Professor Asmatullah of Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) when he came out of his house in Phase 4, Hayatabad in Peshawar, SHO Ibad Wazir told The Express Tribune.

Asmatullah managed to continue driving his car and reached the HMC where he was rushed to the ICU. The hospital's spokesperson Tauhid Zulfiqar said doctors were conducting Asmatullah’s surgery to save his life. He was shot five times, the spokesperson added.

Three men gunned down in Peshawar attack

Dr Asmatullah is currently serving as a professor at the ear, nose and throat (ENT) unit of HMC. He has also rendered services in district headquarter hospital, Lower Dir.

Meanwhile, Provincial Doctors Association Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa condemned the attack on the doctor and demanded arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.

Earlier on September 18, three men employed by the army in civilian capacity were gunned down in the outskirts of Peshawar in what appeared to be a targeted attack. A breakaway faction of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jamatul Ahrar had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Similarly, on September 11, armed men on a motorcycle shot dead a senior member of the polio eradication campaign in Peshawar, in the latest such attack targeting the immunisation teams.
