London's German Gymnasium is named the Best Overall Restaurant

London's German Gymnasium has been named the world's 'Best Overall Restaurant'.

The restaurant that opened its doors in November 2015 grabbed the top spot in the 8th Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. The awards recognise outstanding food and beverage spaces globally, according to the Business Insider.

Here's why the German Gymnasium is considered to be the world's best restaurant:

Designed by architect Edward Gruning in 1864, German Gymnasium is situated in a newly-renovated Grade II listed building between King’s Cross station and St Pancras International.

Initially, it was the first purpose-built gym in England that hosted the first-ever indoor Olympic Games in 1866.

Before turning into a restaurant, German Gymnasium served as offices, storage and an arts exhibition space.

It now has an al fresco terrace, a patisserie counter, an all-day Grand Café and the Meister Bar.

Keeping the original features intact, the designers Conran & Partners revamped the space with modern details.

European dishes from German-born Executive Chef Bjoern Wassmuth and Eastern European wines from a list curated by Head Sommelier Virgile Degrez are served on the first floor of the restaurant.

These are the world's best hotels

Whereas, German tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen can be enjoyed at the Grand Café after 4 pm with a wide range of cakes and pastries.

The Meister Bar features Le Whaf, a special carafe that vaporises cocktails turning them into low-calorie clouds and can be used in a variety of the options on the menu. A London DJ plays at the bar, 9 pm onward from Thursday to Saturday.
