The moon of Muharramul Haram was sighted on Sunday, and Ashura will now fall on October 12, 2016.
According to Radio Pakistan, Chairman of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Mufti Muneebur Rehman announced the moon sighting after a committee meeting.
Commencement of the sacred month also marks beginning a of new Islamic Year, which will start from Monday, October 3.
All provincial governments have prepared for foolproof security measures to be taken during the month as scores of processions associated with the mourning of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) grandson Imam Hussain would take place throughout Muharram.
