The ATC’s judge Justice Raja Shehbaz Khan sentenced Shafiqur Rehman aka Mandela to 35 years in prison while awarding 26-year-imprisonment each to Attaur Rahman and Raji Rehmat, said a court official Bahadur Jamil on Thursday
About 16 terrorists, dressed in Gilgit Scouts uniforms, stormed the high-altitude mountaineering base camp and gunned down 10 climbers and their local cook. The climbers belonged to various countries, including Ukraine, China, Slovakia, Lithuania and Nepal.
The terrorists, hailing from district Diamer’s Gonar Farm and Thak area, had remained at large after the carnage that was unheard of in the G-B’s history and dealt a fatal blow to tourism industry in the region besides giving the country a bad name.
According to the official, cases were registered against the persons under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. The culprits had also been booked for firing at the law enforcement officials in Chilas after security forces tried to arrest them. In the shooting, a security forces’ personnel Amir Ahmed had got injured.
In his decision, the ATC judge also imposed a penalty of Rs0.1 million on each terrorist, asking them to pay the money to the injured person.
In March this year, army chief General Raheel Sharif confirmed death sentence of 13 ‘hardcore terrorists’, including one involved in the Nanga Parbat attack.
