Orange Line project

Letter September 11, 2016
Nobody wants to harm and damage the historical and cultural heritage of Lahore

LAHORE: This is with reference to the letter “Lahore culture under threat” by Rameez Shahid from Karachi (September 9). The Lahore Orange Line Metro Train is being constructed on the most modern lines as a first of its kind project in the history of Pakistan. Its completion will provide comfortable, fast and advanced travelling facilities to about 300,000 people daily. It will also bridge the gap between the rich and poor in terms of travelling facilities.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has stated that the Punjab government respects the decision of the Lahore High Court (LHC) regarding the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train and the provincial government is going to appeal against it in the Supreme Court, which is its right. According to the chief minister, a lot of propaganda has been done by opponents about corruption in the mega project. He went on to challenge anyone to prove even a single penny of corruption committed by him in this and other development projects.

Regarding the writer’s concern about the centuries’ old historical and cultural heritage of Lahore, one cannot differ with him as everyone likes to see and visit historical buildings of the provincial metropolis. However, it will be more proper to wait and see what the courts decide. When the chief minister has said that the LHC’S judgment will be respected, nothing can and will be done in its contravention to harm in any manner the heritage of Lahore and further construction work on the project will only be undertaken in light of the apex Court’s verdict. Surely, nobody wants to harm and damage the historical and cultural heritage of Lahore.
