PM's special envoy highlights held-Kashmir rights violations in Geneva

Leghari urges UN Security Council to implement resolutions that recognise Kashmir as a disputed territory

Special Envoy to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Awais Leghari briefed the international community in Geneva on human rights violations by security forces in India-occupied Kashmir (IoK) on Wednesday.

Leghari is one of the 22 parliamentarians sent by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as his special emissaries across different world capitals to shed light on rights violations in the restive region.



During his meetings with the president of the Human Rights Council, the ICRC president and other ambassadors, Leghari spoke about atrocities by Indian forces on the people of held-Kashmir. The alarming impact of pellet gun injuries leading to the 'dead eyes' phenomenon was also highlighted.

Leghari further urged the UN Security Council to implement resolutions that recognise Kashmir as a disputed territory and call for free and fair plebiscite in the region.



Leghari, the chairman of National Assembly's Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, referred to the premier's letters addressed to the UN secretary general and the high commissioner for human rights "to stop the grievous brutalities of Indian security forces and to investigate the accesses committed against the people of IoK."
