Instagram killing photo maps

Photo-sharing app Instagram has started to remove its photo-map feature.

The feature would display pictures according to where you had taken them. Confirming to Mashable that the company has started removing the maps for some users last week, Instagram said, “Photo Map was not widely used, so we've decided to remove the feature and focus on other priorities.”



Although users can see their own photo maps but that might also change in the near future. However, Geo-tags are not going anywhere. "You will still be able to see location tags on individual posts," Instagram said.



In order to see photo-maps you had to go to a person's profile and click on a small location icon located underneath their bio which would allow you to see a map with photos arranged based on where they were taken. Zoom in on the map and you could get a more fine-grained view.

This move is in line with Instagram’s recent attempts to move away from location based apps such as Foursquare and more towards apps such as Snapchat.



Earlier this year, Instagram added a new feature that gave users the option to make pictures and videos disappear automatically after 24 hours. Snapchat, which has more 100 million users, is known for automatically making postings disappear after 24 hours.

Instagram also introduced the zoom feature allowing users to zoom in to pictures and videos.
