Friday, September 2, saw countless Star Trek fans in New York flock to Star Trek: Mission, a three-day convention honouring the science-fiction franchise’s 50th anniversary, reported Reuters.

Star Trek is all about community, and the fans are a really important part of that. I’m a fan and if I wasn’t on this side of the table, I would probably be on that side,” said actor LeVar Burton, who played Lt Commander Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Also in attendance was Adam Nimoy, the son of late actor Leonard Nimoy who is best known for playing Spock in the franchise. Adam shared details about his upcoming documentary For the Love of Spock in the panel sessions held during the event. The father-son duo began working on the documentary back in November 2014, as a way to mark the upcoming milestone of the show and a chance to bond. Unfortunately, Leonard passed away in February 2015.

“The strain on the relationship with my dad was really a factor of the popularity of Spock - the public’s reaction to Spock. I mean, I couldn’t be out with him in public anymore as we’d be mobbed,” Adam shared. “There was just so much attention, so many people attracted to Spock and dad was so easily recognisable. So, as a young kid, it was very difficult connecting with him. I think he would be very happy with the end product that we came up with…we have worked very hard.”

Highlights at the exhibition, which will run through Sunday, include a replica set where fans can take pictures in the captain’s chair, chief scientists from NASA sharing details of actual space exploration and the selling of commemorative stamps by the US postal service.
