School fees or extortion

Letter September 01, 2016
The elite can afford to pay any amount to educate their children

KARACHI: We live in a country where people prefer to look on silently while injustice is meted out and don’t raise their voices against evil in our society. Therefore, evil prevails and good is often buried. Here, I am reminded of the way private schools are charging exorbitant amount in fees.

At just the preschool level, private schools are charging a lot of fees, with amounts as high as Rs15,000 to Rs18,000 a month being normal. This amount increases every year without fail. Then, add in the cost of buying annual course books and uniforms, and paying for conveyance. School administrations know parents cannot do anything but pay since it is a matter of educating their children.

How much does a father or a family have to earn if the family has more children? To make ends meet and to maintain one’s status, one has to become an earning machine, sacrificing precious life hours and other important things. This is unjust. The elite can afford to pay any amount to educate their children. They should object to the exorbitant fees along with parents who cannot afford the fees but they fail to unite. I, as a responsible citizen, raise my voice against high fees being charged by private schools and urge the government to take action against unfair annual fee increases.
