Lance Klusener, with nine runs needed off the last over, had struck two boundaries off Damien Fleming on the first two deliveries and needed to steal only a single to push his team into the final.
With Allan Donald on the other end, Klusener guided the third ball towards mid-on and Donald survived a run-out attempt by diving back into the crease at the non-striker end. On the next ball, however, Klusener pushed it towards mid-off and ran towards the other end. Donald, still recovering from the previous ball near-run-out chance didn’t trust his partner and kept watching the ball.

He was run out by a mile and Australia qualified for the final against Pakistan due to better run-rate which they eventually won by eight wickets.
In a recent interview with The Cricket Monthly, Donald was asked if he remembered the three fielders who were involved in that famous run out, and the former pacer guessed them right.
“Mark Waugh, definitely [Adam] Gilchrist and I think it was Fleming who caught the ball and rolled it to Gilchrist,” said Donald, when presented with the question.
While answering nine other questions, Donald got a seven right and three wrong in total and was graded B by the website in the 'how well do you know yourself' quiz.
