Strengthening ties: CPEC Summit and Expo kicks off tomorrow

Some 200 dignitaries and investors from China expected at the event

ISLAMABAD: Scores of high-ranking officials of Pakistan and China will attend events at the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Summit and Expo that will kick off on Monday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate the one-day summit and expo on Aug 29. Organised by the planning, development and reform ministry, the event will be held at the Pak-China Friendship Centre in Islamabad with an aim to open new avenues for investments.

An official at the planning, development and reform ministry said some 200 dignitaries and investors from China are expected to participate in the event.

The summit and expo is likely to address all the ongoing controversies being associated with CPEC. The official added that these controversies would be resolved as all government officials would be present during the summit and expo.

The agenda shows that multiple sessions related to CPEC have been lined up. The inaugural session will begin with Ambassador of Pakistan to China Masood Khalid and the Chinese envoy to Pakistan Sun Weidong, along with Special Assistant to the PM on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi. It is expected that the special assistant will deliver a speech focusing on the political and economic relations between the two countries.

Followed by a session on ‘sharing the fruits of regional development’ under the chairmanship of the Adviser to the PM of Foreign Affairs. The panellists along with Aziz will be Chairman Power Construction Corporation of China Yan Zhiyong and President, China Institute of International Studies Su Ge.

The event will also feature a session titled ‘China-Pakistan CEO’s forum’. It will be attended by former vice president, EXIM Bank of Chin aand CPEC consultant Zhu Xinqiang along with chairman, Gul Ahmed Textile Mills Bashir Ali Mohammad.

‘CPEC 2013-2030 - business opportunities for Pakistan and China’ is another session which is scheduled to take place during the summit and expo. It will be jointly chaired by FPCCI President Abdul Rauf Alam and General Manager China Road and Bridge Corporation

One of the sessions will focus on the ‘business opportunities in energy and connectivity infrastructure’ under the chairmanship of Dr Miftah Ismail chairman Board of Investment. During the expo and summit architect Arif Hasan will chair the session on ‘rejuvenating old and creating new cities as centres of growth under CPEC’.
