Lack of safety measures: Plaza owners, contractor booked after labourer’s death

Three days on, police are yet to approach and interrogate the suspects

ISLAMABAD: Police have booked owners and a construction contractor of a plaza after a labourer met an accident and died due to lack of safety measures at the site.

Tahir Munir, a shuttering worker, died after he fell, while working at the Karakoram Diplomatic Enclave plaza inside the diplomatic district of the capital on August 18.

Two other workers, Mudassir and Irfan, also suffered injuries in the incident.

They were taken to Polyclinic Hospital where Munir was pronounced dead, while the two others were discharged after treatment.

After the incident, police visited the scene and found the construction site lacking in safety measures for workers.

The Secretariat police have booked owners of the plaza, major (retd) Saeed Ahmad and Naseer Ahmad, and contractor Muhammad Safdar for the death.

An official of the Secretariat police said that the labourers were working without a helmet and those working at an altitude also wore no belts.

He said that all the three labourers hailed from Okara and were cousins.

Interestingly, three days after the incident, the police have not arrested the accused to interrogate them.

Police said that they did not know where the owners lived.

They said that the contractor was admitted to a hospital for stent implantation.

The owners were not available to comment.
