Profitable sector: LCCI urges development of livestock

LAHORE: Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) urged the government to encourage private sector investment in the livestock sector, which could play a crucial role in the economic uplift of the country besides generating huge revenue and employment opportunities. LCCI President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad said that value of livestock was higher than all the agricultural products. He said that a little focus and public-private partnership could yield positive results, adding that the appetite for Pakistani meat was strong in both domestic and export markets. “Export of live animals should be marginalised and only meat should be exported to get maximum benefits.” Arshad said that 15% milk was wasted in transportation, requiring instant remedies, and more chillers on farmlands needed to be established. The LCCI office-bearer said that poultry meat accounts for around 25% of domestic food requirements. “The major means to cut cost in poultry was through reducing all import items involved in the industry.”
