PESHAWAR: District health officers (DHOs) have been directed to ensure the participation of female teams in their respective districts in upcoming polio campaigns.

The directives were issued by Health Secretary Muhammad Abid Majeed while he was chairing a meeting at the Health Secretariat on Wednesday to review the status of polio eradication in the province.

The meeting was also attended by EOC Coordinator Akbar Khan, Health Services Director General Dr Pervaiz Kamal, UNICEF team leader Dr Johar and WHO team leader Dr Ibrahim Hassan Yalahow.

He added trained local workers should be hired for the job.

“Although the performance indicators are positive, more efforts are needed for completely eradicating the virus,” Majeed said.

According to the health secretary, a comprehensive plan should be chalked out at the union council level to address micro issues in the campaign.

Officials quoted Majeed as saying, “The government is committed to eradicating poliovirus by the end of the year. Negligence will not be tolerated in this regard.”
