Not so super: Black is the new blue
Henry Cavill reveals new Superman suit from ‘Justice League’
Superman is officially going dark. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill – who plays the superhero in the DC films – recently revealed a photograph teasing a black Superman suit which he will, presumably, be wearing in the upcoming Justice League film. And it hints at a major change in the storyline.
Apparently, Justice League will indeed borrow from The Death and Return of Superman which caused hysteria in the comic book world back in 1992. Herein, Superman died in a battle with Doomsday, which was followed by four different individuals wearing the Superman mantle coming forth until the real one returned, dressed in a black uniform with a metallic ‘S’ logo.
On the big screen, Superman already died battling Doomsday at the end of this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which inspired Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) to seek out other talented individuals to form league. But this being a comic book and Cavill already having been announced as a member of the Justice League cast, we knew the Man of Steel actor wouldn’t be staying dead for good. In fact, the final moments of the film showed dirt rising from Superman’s grave.
So what will Superman be like when he returns? In the 90s comics, he came back as the hero he has always been but a black suited Superman could also be a bad guy. In a 2013-2014 comics, the villain Darkseid created a clone of Superman; the black suit-wearing clone went on to cause a lot of trouble before dying.
There is speculation that Superman could be bad – at least for part of Justice League or a future movie. A Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice sequence also shows Superman acting as a tyrant — upset over the death of Lois Lane (Amy Adams). Though it seems unlikely, anything is possible.
Justice League is set for release on Nov 17, next year.
