Handbag-wielding granny attacks jewel thieves

Angry grandmother uses handbag to fight off gang of sledgehammer-wielding robbers attempting to raid jeweller's shop.

LONDON: An angry grandmother used her handbag to fight off a gang of sledgehammer-wielding robbers who were attempting to raid a jeweller's shop in a British town, media reported Tuesday.

The woman in her 70s was captured on video running across a road to confront the crash-helmeted gang.

Wielding her handbag, she hit three of the six robbers and one fell off his moped as he tried to make his escape during the botched raid in Northampton, central England.

Eyewitness Sarah-Jane Brown told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "She was amazing. We were terrified but she ran down the road with her handbag in the air. She did not seem scared."

The gang had been foiled when staff in the shop activated metal shutters to protect the windows.

Five men have been arrested. The woman's identity has not been revealed.

asif bajwa | 13 years ago | Reply well done granny!! the western culture has empowered the female gender as well to be self sufficient & be financially independent.That's why their women are more confident & contribute more to the nation's economy than ours.our women choose to sit at home after marriages instead of getting jobs & waste their education away. millions of rupees are wasted every year as girls after doing their MBBS sit at home after marriage instead of working as doctors,in the process wasting millions of the govt's rupees which provided them with subsidised education in the first place.This army of MBBS PASS housewives ought to be ashamed of themselves for sitting at home changing diapers instead of providing healthcare to the people.
