Raymond Davis case: US lawmakers threaten aid stoppage

Pakistani leaders told that Congress would consider cutting aid unless Raymond Davis is freed.

WASHINGTON: US lawmakers said on Tuesday that they told Pakistani leaders on a visit that Congress would consider cutting aid unless Raymond Davis is freed. Representative Buck McKeon, chair of the House Armed Services Committee, said he mentioned to Pakistani leaders that Congress was working on the budget. Asked if aid could be at risk, McKeon told reporters, “It very well could be.”

Representative John Kline said there “would be a lot of support” for cutting aid if the American, who the United States insists has diplomatic immunity, is not freed.

Faizi | 13 years ago | Reply Dear Friends, This is the true that American govt and his civilians are paying a lot in the war against terror. They also help us a lot in the flood and even in the earth quake and also in the betterment of our civilization. If we count all of these so it may out of our figures but At the other hand if we have an eye about the distribution of the aid that had been given to the govt of Pakistan so there we will find the answer. The aid was given for the people that need but our politicians are much moor deserve for the aid because its hand out to them. Here we have to take the decision that weather this is AID is needed to us? The support is for whom and who will pay the price??

DarkStar | 13 years ago | Reply Pakistan does not rely, or survive on American Aid. Most American aid goes to International NGOs and some local ones who implement fringe programs with limited benefits to the Pakistani people or economy. These NGOs spend a majority of their cash on expenses such as salaries, travel, accommodation. Very little ends up with the Pakistani government, or helps in job creation. Instead these private NGOs live the life of riley at the Pakistani taxpayers expense, because this 'Aid' is in the forms of loans which we have to pay back with added interest. Military aid is also benefiting them more than us, because with any money they lend to us, we are contracted to buy American equipment. Equipment that is usually sub-standard, used, obsolete and expensive. All to be paid back with interest added. This Aid instead of helping us, hinders us in the mid-long term, and is a recipe for financial disaster. The best thing that we can do is stop all these loans coming in, which are only being given to line the pockets of our corrupt politicians/bureaucrats, and learn to stand on our own feet.

common sence | 13 years ago | Reply Look at the facts, it was a desire for liberal representative government that prevailed in overthrowing the autocrats in Egypt and Tunisia, not the desire for an Islamic "Republic". The people of the middle east don't want a Muslim empire they want individual rights. Even if the Salafists succeed in creating another is Islamic "Republic" it will not be long lived. It will be a isolated spec quickly corrupted by capitalism. State and Religion cannot successfully mix in this age of globalization. Iran will serve as a demonstration of the failure of the Islamic Republic in the next ten years.

Valentin | 13 years ago | Reply I think all of US, NATO and western troops should withdraw from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and cut all financial aid to Pakistan. Egyptians, Tunisians, Libyans, Barheinis, Algerians, have just shown you get the government you deserve.

Now all the treaties and conventions will be used against Pakistan..What happened when Israelis killed aid workers of Turkey and other countries.. Where you put the red line against Israel? How can UN is silence about Bush and Blair..they lied about WMD in Iraq? Killed thousands of innocent people and captures the oil resources can anyone take them to International Criminal Court of UN for their acts...War On Terrorism is about War for Natural Resources....An ordinary people in Pakistan never heard of Al Qaeda before ...its been heard after 9/11.....Americans (if I used this term it means only American think tanks and military policy makers) have that fear that Islam is there next threat...which will rise against them.....Americans get freedom for East Timor and Darfur...but they didn't want Kashmiris and Palestinians to used their rights for freedom as they are called them Terrorist...

This is just another event in Pakistan where poor Pakistani's are paying for it and been suffering. Please, fight back you guys have been suffering like Palestinians and Kashmiri's the worst thing is that these blood suckers Aid suckers using civilians and playing with thr emotions since past 60 yrs.These people are not aware of the fact that what happened in 1947 was not a joke we all can get together and repeat 1947 in Pakistan against these blood suckers politicians* This 911 drama is been going on for too long we all knwo stories behind that too. Pakistan should really get together with Russian and fight these issues with Russia, I am sure Russians will be very happy to help Pakistan.

Trust us on the fact that ordinary Pakistanis have regard for Indians too and in all honesty, we are as skeptical about Indian forces as we are about ours. I guess we are just more of a slave to our serving elite than you are!

The U.S. government asked the Georgian government to waive his immunity, which they did and Makharadze was tried and convicted of manslaughter by the U.S. and sentenced to seven to twenty-one years in prison. The first three years of his sentence were served in a North Carolina prison, after which he was repatriated to his home nation of Georgia to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Ahmer Ali | 13 years ago | Reply Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah.This threat shall be definitely the shocking news for our corrupt and beggars leaders.But now they must have to take bold steps to secure and rescue Pakistanis from the killings by the foreigners and if this incident is happened in USA then do our corrupt and beggars leaders threaten USA to stop supply from Peshawar to Afghanistan for US and NATO troops?Now the time has come to prove that Pakistan is not a completely dependent country on US aid and against this threat our leaders must threaten US officials to block supply from Pakistan to Afghanistan for NATO and US troops if they have honor,grace,dignity and self-respect and courage to stand on their own feet.They never bow down their knees before US officials' this threat.They must have to show bravery and courage in this regard to show that we are independent and sovereign state and can't afford interfere of any country in our internal confidential matters at any cost and we can protect our nation and we have courage to protect Pakistan from any internal and external threat.How long we shall afford dishonor,disgrace and insult by the advanced Western countries' leaders against begging the aid?When we shall stand on our feet for the real self-reliance,prosperity and sovereignty?When we shall wake up from the dreams of carelessness?

Also, US will make sure IMF will set out the strictest of conditions for Loans. This has made India's job much easier. Let the people of Pak know how much dependent and bankrupt their nation is.

The moment they realize this, game changes. Call the bluff. And send a bill to US congress for $500B for their bungle up in Afghanistan that has cost Pakistan its security and economy. Don't settle for chump change. It is all a bluff.

But at the same time, they expect the impoverished countries to grant a full diplomatic immunity to their terrorists, who can kill anybody anytime, just because they are Americans. Terrorist America refused to accept the diplomatic immunity of the Deputy Ambassador of Georgia, who had killed an American woman in a car accident. This ambassador in the end, was sentenced to imprisonment in USA. This is the very same Terrorist America, which is demanding a diplomatic immunity for its Micky Mouse Terrorist, Raymond Davis in Pakistan. What a joke. This is called, the Micky Mouse Justice of Micky Mouse America. We hate Micky Mouse America. We urge all to boycott all Micky Mouse Products of America in Pakistan, starting from Pepsi & Coke.

This will also lead to solving the problems of Baluchistan, FATA, Kashmir, Karachi. Pakistan will get a true democracy, where people will have a say. The Balochis will get what they want, people from KP will get what they want, Kashmiris will get what they want and Karachi will get what it wants. Having the Americans out will help solve the so many problems that plague Pakistan today.

Logically you cant explain an ordinary citizen that when a country runs on aid and loans, it loses its sovereignty. Pakistan's bravado and thirst for 'justice' only lasts until the US threatens to pull the plug on aid money. Pakistan's 'ghairat' is restricted to sound bytes only. COAS met with Hilary Clinton yesterday and this arrangement has already been thrashed out.
