Tehreek-e-Ehtesab: PTI will now unveil future plan on Aug 16

Party leaders to hold core committee meeting on Tuesday.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is expected to announce its future course of action regarding its ongoing accountability movement, Tehreek-e-Ehtesab, on August 16 (Tuesday).

The decision will be taken following the party’s core committee meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday.

PTI chief Imran Khan left many astounded when he refrained from mentioning the party’s future plans for the ongoing movement in his speech on Saturday.

His party initiated the accountability movement last week in Peshawar in the backdrop of the government’s delaying tactics to form an inquiry commission under the joint opposition’s suggested terms of reference to probe allegations against it following the Panama leaks.

“PTI’s core committee had met last week where it was decided that Imran Khan will not announce any date or venue of the protest for the campaign in the August 13 rally,” senior PTI leader Dr Arif Alvi told The Express Tribune.

PTI supporters started the rally from Rawalpindi and ended it in Islamabad.

Alvi further said that on August 16 the party’s core committee would come up with their next course of action.

In response to a question, Alvi said that PTI would definitely give a last chance to the government by attending the proceedings of the parliamentary committee on the Panama Papers.



“We will listen to what the government has to say [over investigations into the Panama Papers],” Alvi added.

When contacted, Shah Mehmood Qureshi also endorsed Alvi’s stance.

It was earlier anticipated that Imran would announce the party’s next course of plan along with a protest date and venue during Saturday’s rally.

“If our Tehreek-e-Ehtesab (Accountability Movement) reaches Lahore according to schedule, then you may not get a chance even to flee to Jeddah. That time the PTI will not have any concession to offer to the rulers,” Imran Khan had said while addressing his supporters on August 13.

So far, only the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and Sheikh Rasheed-led Awami Muslim League (AML) have offered their unconditional support to PTI.

A senior PTI leader, who wished not to be named, said the party’s leadership had a political conviction that it was not the appropriate time to march to Lahore.
