KARACHI: Pakistan’s sports community celebrated the Independence Day by holding various events across the country.

In Pishin, the Independence Day was celebrated through a match between Afghan Football Club Chaman and Afghan Sports Quetta which the former won 3-0.

Afghan FC Chaman’s Jadeed Khan expressed his delight and dedicated the victory to the victims of the Quetta attack, where more than 70 people lost their lives.

Making a statement: Perfect start for Mourinho as United win 3-1

“This match was important because we’ve gone through a major tragedy in Balochistan,” Jadeed told The Express Tribune. “The flags were fewer compared to last year, but we can only come together through sports and especially football in times like these. We also held a one-minute silence for Quetta before the match.”

Meanwhile, at the Karachi Race Club, Leading Star won the Independence Day Cup; an annual fixture at the Karachi Race Club.

Mohammad Essa rode the horse and finished the six-furlong race in 1min 18 seconds, while So What with rider Muhammad Manzoor took the second position and Quicken Away with rider Sohail Ahmed finished third out of 11 horses in the main event.
