'Work on gas pipeline complete with Iran'

Iran's Ambassador to India Seyed Mahdi Nabizadeh said that work was also in progress on the Pakistan side.

NEW DEHLI: Iran on Tuesday said that 90 per cent of work on the Iran and Pakistan gas pipeline was complete within its territory and it was open for having trade arrangements with any country in the energy sector.

Iran's Ambassador to India Seyed Mahdi Nabizadeh said that work was also in progress on the Pakistan side and it was ready to start 50 per cent of the total 60 millions of cubic meters (mcm) capacity once the pipeline was in place.

"We have allocated 50 per cent of the capacity to Pakistan. Any other country, including India, can join and post their notices for the remaining 50 per cent of the gas," he said speaking through an interperter.

Nabizadeh maintained that the project should not be looked at purely from an economic perspective but as an initiative that would strengthen cultural ties in the region and have a positive impact on the relationship of the three countries.

It is not just the problems of transit through wild, no man's lands of Pakistan and Afghanistan where even the pipelines that bring energy to Pakistan are routinely bombed by insurgents. Add to that the jihadi lunatics of Pakistan itself who are hell-bent in making every effort to harm, if not to destroy India. Imagine here you have created a huge economy in Indian border states and all of a sudden the energy lines to them are disrupted. What happens to all that investment aside from immense disruptions in the lives of population working that economy? How and from where can you substitute the energy to keep the industry gears turning. That is why even a pipeline from Iran running subsurface in ocean is not a desirable option. Then, Iranian regime's days may also be numbered!!!!

Singh | 13 years ago | Reply Pakistan cant save its own pipelines ,nor can afganistan do . Iran is volatile too.Its better to lay a longer pipeline under sea which is not feasible.So better restrict to ship transportation.
