These surgeries will be carried out under an initiative launched in Haripur by the provincial government. The purpose of the project is to train qualified personnel and provide treatment for eye diseases. The project has been titled Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO).
Briefing the doctors, paramedics and other health professionals, Dr Nasir Saeed said PICO is a foreign-funded intervention that has been launched in Mansehra, Haripur, Swabi and Swat districts.
“Under this four-year project, the provincial government will develop the capacities of 300 lady health workers and 125 medical officers,” he said. “At least 125 medical technicians will be trained about primary eye care to help raise awareness among 650,000 people at the community level.”
According to Saeed, eye units in each of the district headquarters hospitals would be improved. “Human Resource personnel trained under the project will carry out screening of 800,000 patients.”
