Golfers gear up for CNS Championship

Winner in professional category to take home trophy and Rs6.5 million.

KARACHI: More than 350 golfers from around the country, including top professional golfers, have registered themselves for the 21st CNS Open Golf Championship, which is scheduled to start today at the Karachi Golf Club (KGC).

The championship is offering the highest prize money among all tournaments in the country, with the winner in the professional category to pocket Rs6.5 million and Rs0.5 million up for grabs in the caddies and semi-professional matches.

Muhammad Munir, Pakistan’s top-ranked golfer, will be defending his title at the CNS Golf Championship, which he won last year with a 21-under-par score followed by Shahid Javaid with 16-under-par and Shabbir Iqbal finishing third with 13-under-par.

“I played [and won] in difficult weather conditions in the COAS championship [last week], so I’m high on confidence,” Munir told The Express Tribune. “The greens of KGC are in perfect shape and the weather is supportive too, so I’m positive that I will retain the title.”

He added that he hopes to take the lead on the opening day so that he has a good head start for the remainder of the championship.

“It’s my goal to win three big championships in a row. I’ve already captured the COAS title, next aim is the CNS trophy and then the DHA Independence Day Golf Championship,” said Munir.
