PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court restrained a provincial government committee from carrying out work.

The committee has been tasked to propose recommendations to regularise commercial activities in University Town, a residential area in Peshawar. The government had constituted the committee to identify businesses that were being run in the locality. It had ordered the government to shut them down.

The high court was hearing a contempt of court petition on Wednesday. The petition was filed by resident Nilofar through her lawyer Qazi Jawwad Ihsanullah. A bench, headed by Justice Musarrat Hilali, was told that PHC had categorically ordered the provincial government to close down commercial activities in the locality.

Jawwad said the provincial government had formed a committee to identify businesses being established in the locality instead of implementing the court order in its letter and spirit. He said the committee was tasked to ascertain the number of houses that were being used for commercial activities and propose a cluster of recommendations.

He said that the committee was formed in violation of court orders that was tantamount to contempt of court. As a result, contempt proceedings should be initiated against the provincial government.
