BAHAWALPUR/MULTAN: Preparations to celebrate Independence Day are underway in several districts.

The Bahawalpur district administration has finalised a 14-day programme in this regard. Celebrations will begin on August 1 and will continue till August 14. This was announced at a meeting of heads of departments in the DCO’s committee room on Sunday. DCO Ehtisham Anwar Mahaar chaired the meeting.

The DCO announced that various NGOs and civil society organisations were taken on board while planning celebration events. “They will join various district departments in organising events and celebrating Independence Day with patriotic zeal and enthusiasm.

The events planned are speeches and national songs competitions for students, lighting up medians from Farid Gate to Circuit House at Fawara Chowk and decorating public and private buildings. The national flag will be hoisted at all prominent buildings. The DCO said the main event was an Independence Day public parade in which the national flag will be hoisted. The parade will begin at Circular Road and end at Eid Gah. The Pakistan Army, Rangers, Punjab Police, Rescue-1122 and boy scouts from various schools will be represented at the parade.

The Cholistan Development Authority has made floats that depict the culture of the people of Cholistan desert. The floats will be presented at the parade. The Sports Department has organised several sports events to be held daily between August 1 and August 14.

The DCO has requested district heads of departments and officials to play a positive role in organising Independence Day programmes.

Additional District Collector Imrana Ajmal, District Officer Coordination Amjad Bashir, Bahawalpur city Assistant Commissioner Rao Tasleem Akhter, the community development EDO, education EDO and tehsil municipal officers were present at the meeting.

Multan

Tehsil Sports Officer Jameel Kamran held a meeting at his office on Sunday to discuss wrestling competitions organised in connection with the Jashn-i-Azadi Sports Gala. He said the wrestling competitions will be held at the Gymnasium Hall on August 5. He announced a three-member committee of judges comprising Hamid Khan Pehlwan, Achi Pehlwan and Khadim Hussain. Practice sessions for the competition will begin on August 1.

“Those who want to participate should register their names at Sports District Officer Chaudhry Muhammad Siddiq’s office by August 2,” Kamran said.

The weight categories announced for the wrestling competitions are: 70kg, 80kg, 90kg, 100kg and 125kg.
