'You have sacrificed nothing and no one': Father of Pakistani-American war hero to Trump

The father of a Muslim US soldier killed in Iraq accused Donald Trump of vilifying patriotic American Muslims while "sacrificing nothing" himself, in a steely rebuke that electrified the Democratic convention Thursday.

Khizr Khan -- whose son Humayun died in a 2004 suicide bombing in Baquba -- admonished the Republican presidential nominee for his plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States.

"Tonight we are honored to stand here as parents of Captain Humayun Khan and as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to the country," he said, stirring delegates who had watched a video tribute to his son in captivated silence.

"If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have been in America," he said. "Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims."

"Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with their future, let me ask you -- have you even read the United States Constitution?" he said, brandishing a copy to loud cheers.

"I will gladly lend you my copy!" Khan said, demanding Trump look for the word "liberty" and consult the 14th amendment, which guarantees equal protection before the law.

"Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery?" he demanded, as many in the audience were moved to tears. "Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities."

"You have sacrificed nothing, and no one!" he said.

Ibnul H. Rizvi | 8 years ago | Reply Before Mr. Khizr Khan came on the podium, he was introduced by a written message from Mrs. Hilary Clinton that he was from UAE. There was no mention of Pakistan. Mr. Mahakalchakra confirms this. The omission of Pakistan was deliberate. It is so unfortunate that we Pakistanis grieve with Mr. Khizr, and feel honored by his son's sacrifice and proud of it, he ignored his Pakistan's connection. Trump suspects people of Pakistan origin, he had his opportunity to point his finger like he did many times and told Trump that my son was. Muslim and a Pakistani-American.

Although he was born in The United Arab Emirates, Humayun Khan was of Pakistani heritage. The press release about his funeral said, “His colleagues and superiors remembered him for his courage, honesty, sense of humor and grace while in the field, even under pressure. Captain Khan’s colleagues eulogized his exemplary services and praised him for the leadership he provided to his troops.” A Muslim chaplain spoke at the funeral about “the ethnically-diverse group that had come to pay its respects to Captain Khan,” who was described in the release as “one amongst the growing number of Pakistani Americans in the U.S. Army.”

No society, even Indian and Hindu society is 100% perfect. It is called being human. Learn to accept it. As to what is happening in the world, it is all international political drama.
