KARACHI: There’s a new place for food enthusiasts in Karachi who are always on the hunt for authentic cuisine. ‘Il Posto’ – the Italian word for ‘The Place’ is the brainchild of Sara Gillani and Arslan Nayeem, both of who have worked hard to offer a variety of Italian dishes on the menu. To introduce Karachiites to the best of Italy, the owners organised a special evening on July 26. The event was co-sponsored by the Italian consulate as well as Italian food companies such as Barilla and Auricchio.

Upon entering, one steps into the small, low-key lit place. Waiters are busy preparing and serving guests. The walls are adorned by monochrome as well as coloured photographs depicting Italian culture in its true essence.

The evening gathered a decent audience from a variety of circles. From bankers to media personalities such as Ayesha Omar, everyone seemed to be having a good time, chatting with each other and getting a savor of the Italian cuisine. Margherita pizza (made of tomato sauce, Mozzarella and basic), authentic Barilla pasta, and Auricchio cheese were on the house for the guests.

The restaurant, which opened two months ago, offers a myriad of South Italian dishes, from Antipasti (appetiser) to Primi Piatti (first course, which often consists of pasta) and Secondi Piatti (second course).

Talking to The Express Tribune, Sara’s husband Zubair Gillani explained the name of the place, saying, “It’s quite simple and straight to the point. If you want to try authentic Italian food, Il Posto is the place for you.” He insisted the idea of the restaurant comes from his wife. “I am not the owner. It is all her creation, and her business partner Nayeem’s.”

Italian consulate culture coordinator, Muhammad Haroon, was of the view that it is hard to find authentic Italian cuisine in Pakistan. “The food is quite oily here. Even if you go to restaurants serving foreign cuisine, it is not authentic. Here, at Il Posto, we have Italian food companies sponsoring the products. It is as authentic as they come,” said Haroon.

Zubair stated Il Posto received an overwhelming response following its launch. “It has been great. The place is frequently visited by personalities such as Shehzad Roy and others. I think the event was a success as well. People enjoyed the Italian cuisine.”

Located on main Khayaban-e-Shahbaz, the restaurant is accessible to Defence-dwellers and others alike. So, if you are out craving a taste of Italy, Il Posto is the place to be.
