QUETTA: Balochistan Assembly Speaker Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani, while highlighting the benefits of precious stone business, said on Tuesday that trade in gems and jewellery contributed billions of dollars to the international economy annually.

She added that several jobless youth including females could earn a respectful livelihood through this field.

She was addressing a certificate distribution ceremony held by the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC) at the Ministry of Production.

The speaker said, “Pakistan, especially Balochistan, is rich in natural resources, particularly precious gemstones. We can generate hundreds of thousands of jobs by promoting the business of gems and jewellery.”

She requested the federal government to give the status of industry to this business. She also suggested that women should get training in jewellery designing and manufacturing at the centres established in several cities.

“Once the training courses are completed, these women can then join PGJDC and earn a decent living while remaining at home.”

According to Durrani, the businesses pertaining to gems and jewellery can not only boost the country’s economy but they can also generate more job opportunities.

PGJDC Chairman Abdul Razzaq said there was a huge scope of business in gems and jewellery. “After the completion of training course, one does not need to find a job but can earn after initiating her own business,” he said.

PGJDC CEO Bakhtiar Khan said gems and jewellery designing, manufacturing and faceting were making a special contribution to the international economy.
