PM Nawaz presides over top security huddle in Islamabad

Committee deliberated on several internal, regional security issues, including recent violation in occupied Kashmir

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday presided over an important meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in Islamabad following his return to the capital after an absence of nearly two months.

The committee deliberated on several important internal and regional security issues, including the recent violation of human rights by Indian security forces in the occupied Kashmir, Pak-Afghan border security situation and intelligence based operations (IBOs) across the country and Karachi in particular, sources told The Express Tribune.

It was decided to invite hurriyat leadership based in Pakistan as special guests in the upcoming joint session of the Parliament, they added.



The prime minister expressed his full confidence on security forces’ counter-terrorism drive and put his weight behind the security agencies in Karachi and elsewhere.

PM Nawaz directed the exhaustion of all options to eliminate terrorism. The PM was also briefed about construction of 37-metre-long gate at Torkham border to stop illegal movement to and from the Pak-Afghan border.

PM Nawaz had last summoned a meeting of the NSC back in April after a gap of nearly 17 months. Since then, many important developments have taken place in the country.

The meeting was attended by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), chiefs of all three arms of the military, DG Inter-Services Intelligence, PM’s advisers on national security and foreign affairs, important cabinet members including ministers of finance, interior, defence and information who are part of this committee.

Earlier Thursday, Nawaz returned to the federal capital on a special flight from Lahore.



“He spent the first day doing important file work for three to four hours before going to his residence,” one of his aides told The Express Tribune.

Pictures tweeted by his daughter Maryam Nawaz showed the premier meeting with some officials.
