Nice attack

Letter July 19, 2016
The attack once again underscores that citizens across the world are not safe

TURBAT, KECH: Once again, France was caught in the line of fire. Of the approximately 16 terror incidents that occurred in Western nations this year, five of them happened in France, including the deadliest one in Nice, where a 31-year-old Tunisian truck driver named Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed into a crowd on Bastille Day, killing at least 80 civilians and injuring hundreds of others. Veritably, France is filled with sadness by this latest tragedy and it is curious why terrorists keep succeeding in France.

It is also a sad contrast that on the day of the attack, the French people were celebrating the day that marked the beginning of the French Revolution — filled with sentiments of happiness, patriotism and camaraderie among French citizens. The attack once again underscores that citizens across the world are not safe. The only way we can meet the many challenges currently being confronted by the countries of the world is to stand united with the people along their governments and keep up our fight against extremist violence and hatred. May the departed souls, young and old, rest in peace.
