Jirga in Wana: Committee formed to ensure all children go to school

Elders of Kara Khel tribe vow to provide free tuition, books

D I KHAN: Elders of Kara Khel tribe in Wana have constituted a committee to ensure every child goes to school and provided free tuition and books.

The decision was taken during a jirga in Sirkai Kot village on Monday. During the jirga, participants decided all those children who had not yet been admitted at schools will be enrolled at education institutes.

According to the elders, members of this committee have been tasked with finding children in the region who have not been sent to school. The members will also make arrangements for their school fees, books and other requirements.



Zubair Khan, who participated in the jirga, told The Express Tribune “A timeframe has also been provided. We have to complete the task by next Eidul Fitr.” He added, “We are committed to our cause and we know that education is the only way forward. It will help in eliminating illiteracy.”

Noor Wazir, a resident of Wana, lauded the step, saying it will sow the seed for a positive change.

“Other tribes of the area should follow it,” he said.

According to insiders, the youth of Kara Khel tribe had floated the idea of sending children to schools. They persuaded the elders in this regard and a jirga was organised to throw weight behind the decision.
