KARACHI:
Officials of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) raided the education and literacy department's office at the Sindh Secretariat on Friday afternoon to seize records and inquire about the alleged unlawful appointments carried out in 2012.

According to a NAB Karachi spokesperson, an inquiry officer seized original records of 1,300 illegally appointed teachers who were hired allegedly against bribes in 2012. He added that statements of witnesses and suspects were recorded as well.

The raiding team also inquired about the controversial appointments from the relevant officers present at the office, which included drawing and disbursement officer Adbul Azeem.

Azeem, while talking to The Express Tribune, said the NAB representative did not seal any records or files as they already have all the details and data on the illegal appointments of 2012. "They were handed over the data two years ago," he said, adding that the NAB representatives often come to the department to question various people in the case.

He also said that he has informed the NAB officials to question the transfers and postings director regarding the matter of appointments as it is not their concern as they do not have the powers to appoint anyone.

Meanwhile, education secretary Fazlullah Pechuho told The Express Tribune that NAB was given all the details regarding the case two years ago. "We have submitted all the data that NAB had asked for," he said.

"They are just coming here again and again to hide their mistake of not taking any action against the culprits," he claimed, adding that his department has even provided them with the evidence but still they are not doing anything.

The NAB is investigating senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and former provincial education minister, Pir Mazharul Haq, for allegedly causing a loss of up to Rs6 billion to the national exchequer by illegally appointing 13,000 teachers in the department.
