A pitiable retreat

Letter February 04, 2011
We have to discuss how to interpret verses in an enlightened way and not pretend to deny their existence.

AMANZIMTOTI, SOUTH AFRICA: This refers to your editorial of February 4 titled “A pitiable retreat”. As a member of the PPP, Sherry Rehman is bound to follow her party's decisions. In a world where difference of opinion on faith can end one’s life, I can well understand her worries and predicament. She is a brave woman and I still look up to her.

Also, I agree with the editorial where it says that the Holy Quran does not have many verses on death for blasphemy. Although some verses from the Makkah period talked of forgiveness, those from the later period related to punishments for blasphemy. What we have to discuss is how to interpret these verses in an enlightened way and not pretend to deny their existence.
