KALLAR SYEDAN: While taking exception to a highway robbery that took place near Chowk Pindori on Kallar Syedan last week, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has directed the Rawalpindi police chief to immediately arrest the culprits.

A Kashmiri expatriate family was robbed by three armed highwaymen, a few yards from a Punjab Highway Police (PHP) squad present in the locality, at around 4am on Saturday last week.

The robbers had snatched 5,000 pound sterling (approximately Rs6,78,775), 35 tola (437.5 grams) of gold jewellery worth Rs2,042,975, two British passports, cheque books, mobile phones and other documents.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Fakhar Sultan Raja chaired at a  meeting on Wednesday said that robbery incidents in the presence of the patrolling police and PHP squad were a matter of concern for the police, which would not be tolerated.

The meeting was told that four-day remand of the arrested driver of PHP, Fahim, has been sought and the police were also working on different angles to get to the bottom and to resolve the robbery issue.

According to the sources, the police were also investigating whether or not the police officials were directly involved in robberies or conniving with the robbers.

Investigation officer of the case, Sub-inspector Altaf said that the police were still collecting and retrieving the data of old offenders and criminals to related the case with previous robbery incidents.

Meanwhile, according to police sources, it transpired that the two CCTV cameras installed near the Chowk Pindori have not been functioning for the last six years. The police, according to the sources, never bothered to use footages from the hidden cameras for the last many years to probe and detect robbery cases.
