LAHORE:

The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) removed more than 20,000 tonnes of waste from the City during Eid holidays, LWMC Managing Director Bilal Mustafa Syed said on Saturday.

He said the company had served Lahoris during Eid holidays by ensuring cleanliness across the city. He said more than 8,000 LWMC employees had been in the field.

He said the field staff had worked in three shifts from chand raat (Tuesday night) until Friday. He said they had done their best during the Zero Waste Operation that had been designed to remove waste before Eid prayers.

Syed said nearly 6,000 tonnes of waste was removed on chand raat and 14,000 tonnes from Wednesday to Friday. He said the company had cleared 8,500 waste containers using compactors of Turkish companies – Albayrak and Ozpak. Sanitary workers had been deputed at mosques, markets and recreational places to maintain cleanliness, the managing director said. He said the management had used Android-based technology to monitor the operation. The LWMC had received 154 complaints at its helpline 1139. The complaints were addressed timely, he said. Most of the complaints related to manual sweeping, removal of waste and dead animals and disposal of waste from the containers.

Syed said the company had arranged activities to sensitise people about the significance of clean environment. Public briefings, leaflets and small gifts were distributed among citizens at Hazoori Bagh and Lahore Fort during Eid holidays.
