Edhi earns a torrent of tributes from all over nation, abroad

Tributes poured in from all over Pakistan and the world after the country’s biggest humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away late Friday night.

Expressing grief and sorrow, PM  Nawaz Sharif said: “He (Mr Edhi) was a real gem and asset for Pakistan. We have lost a great servant of humanity.”

The premier said Abdul Sattar Edhi was the real manifestation of love for those who were socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless and poor.

President Mamnoon Hussain said: “The services of the late Edhi will always be remembered and people working in … social work will feel proud by following in his footsteps.”

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif offered condolences on the death of the prominent social worker and said: “The nation has lost a great human being today.”

DG of ISPR Maj-Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa said: “With legendary Edhi sahib passing away not only Pakistan but the world will mourn the loss of a great human being. May he rest in peace.”


Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani said that the death of legendary humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi was a great loss. “He was a beacon of hope for the poor and destitute of the society and earned worldwide recognition for his humanitarian work.”

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan said he was “part and parcel of the down-trodden people of Pakistan … He was an asset of Pakistan.”

Abdul Sattar Edhi passes away in Karachi

Former president Asif Ali Zardari called him “the identity of Pakistan”. “He presented a great example of serving humanity.”

PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who directed all Sindh cabinet to participate in Edhi’s funeral, said: “He was a great human being … His death has left millions orphaned today … We mourn the death our remarkable philanthropist, the great patriot, the selfless Abdul Sattar Edhi, who devoted his entire life to serve the nation.”

India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said: “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Edhi Foundation.”
