DI KHAN: The killing of a lawyer in DI Khan on first day of Eid sparked widespread protests.

According to the police, the incident is believed to be a sectarian attack and took place even though security had been tightened. This was the fifth such attack in the last few months.

An official told The Express Tribune unidentified people on a motorbike, gunned down Advocate Shahid Abbas Shirazi near Wensam College in DI Khan. The incident triggered widespread protests and aerial firing. An official, who requested anonymity, told The Express Tribune the culprits had managed to victimise a well-known figure from the Shia community.

Locals said the killing triggered a protest – people took to the streets against the district administration and opened fire in the air. This panicked people in markets  and they closed their shops.

However, the roads blocked in protest were reopened after successful negotiations between protesters and Minister for Revenue Ali Amin Gandapur, DI Khan DPO Yasir Khan Afridi, officers of the armed forces and civil society members.
