KARACHI: Singer and philanthropist Shehzad Roy released a new video, Sirf Bandhi Hai Kamar, on Sunday, addressing the issue of rote learning and emphasising the need for critical thinking in our society.

“Over 90% of questions in the Matric examination are based on rote memorisation! Now is the time to build critical thinking in our students#  reformmatricboard,” the Mukhra singer wrote with the upload.

The Saqib Khan directed video, which is also accompanied by a small song that pulls together famous verses of both Ghalib and Iqbal, shows the consequences people have to face when they question authority figures and established facts. The hilarious sequences open with a mom turning into Quentin Tarantino’s iconic character, The Bride, when her son asks her why can he not buy ice cream. The second sees a teacher turn into the Hulk when his student questions him during what seems to be a history lesson. This is followed by people turning into Maula Jatt and Kill Bill: Volume 2’s fictional martial arts master Pai Mei for similar reasons.

What seems a little strange is that Roy’s stated concept does not go well with the video that nowhere addresses the issue of reforming board examinations in the country. On the other hand, the concept of raising questions might be a little too clichéd but the execution does entail finesse. In a day the song has garnered almost 0.8 million views on Facebook alone.
