The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) on Sunday clarified the reasons behind the problems its customers faced last week.

“We at NBP are at a loss that despite our efforts to service our customers – by keeping our branches open till 8pm on June 29 and until midnight on June 3 and processing over a million transactions worth over Rs100 billion – certain inaccurate reports were published in newspapers that created a negative image of the bank,” it said in an official statement.

Empty ATMs deprive people of Eid shopping

“We would like to clarify and give a true picture for the benefit of our customers. On July 2, our branches were opened at 8am but due to delay in availability of the system as a result of an extraordinary volume of transactions over previous days and longer end of day processing, the branches could only service a certain segment of customers.

There was no system breakdown as reported in certain newspapers and our ATMs were fully functional and processed more than 250,000 transactions.

Citizens line-up to withdraw money from ATMs

In addition, the management of the bank made arrangements to keep NBP branches open till late at night on July 2. As a result the bank started servicing all customers in the afternoon and continued until the last customer was served, including our valued pensioners and salaried persons throughout Pakistan.”

“We regret any inconvenience to our customers and assure them of our utmost commitment to provide
the best possible service,” NBP added.

Ishrat Salim | 8 years ago | Reply @khan: May be, but many pensioners have their sons & daughters who are literate enough to use ATM card. This will definitely reduce pressure on banks. How rural area people are using Benazir Income Scheme Card ? They use same in bank machine to withdraw. SMS is sent on their mobile that money transferred & they go to any ATM & withdraw. How easy paisa is working ? Where there is a will there is a way...we in Pakistan try to find excuses for non-implementation of solutions, that is why we are in a mess.
khan | 8 years ago | Reply @ishrat most of nbp customers are illiterate or under matric and do not prefer ATM Cards. You can only imagine workload of NBP daily transactions which are usually more than one month transactions of private banks
