HARIPUR: A man was gunned down in a suspected case of honour killing on Thursday evening while the life of his wife remains in danger.

An official of City police station told The Express Tribune on Friday 24-year-old Ismail Khan, a resident of Peshawar, eloped with a girl.

“The couple solemnised their marriage at a court in Haripur,” he said.

A jirga was convened to discuss the matter. The girl's family took her back home and assured they would not harm her. They also decided to get the couple married under traditional wedding customs after Eid.

However, on Thursday evening, Ismail was passing by the gate of Tableeghi Markaz near Darwesh village in Haripur when an unidentified gunman opened fire on him with a 30-bore pistol. He died on the spot.

The victim's father said he is unaware of his daughter-in-law’s whereabouts and fears for her safety. He was afraid the girls family will also kill her.
