Income details the singer showed in his tax returns doesn’t represent true picture of his actual wealth, FBR believes

Famous singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was sent a notice on Tuesday by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for not providing accurate wealth details in his tax returns for the year 2013.

The revenue body had also sent him the notice earlier as well that demanded a reply from the singer for the income he had garnered while performing outside Pakistan by June 22.

“Rahat has earned millions of rupees by performing in India, United States of America and in United Kingdom in 2013,” said an official of FBR Lahore chapter.

However, he never showed the complete details of the income he earned through such concerts in his tax returns, the official added.

FBR sent the notice to Rahat under Section 122 5-A, it has been learnt. The official said the major chunk of singer’s income came from performing abroad.

According to FBR, Rahat was intensely involved with his Indian counterparts as a play back singer for different movie projects.

“The income he showed in his tax returns doesn’t represent the true picture of his actual income,” the official added.

In 2011, Rahat was called to the Lahore Regional Tax Office after his return from a foreign tour and informed by members of the FBR that he had not paid his taxes for the past five years despite the board’s repeated notifications.

Rahat pleaded ignorance of Pakistani tax laws and procedures and promised to file tax returns on time henceforth.

On this occasion, FBR member Khawar Khursheed Butt said that Rahat was a national icon and that the board believes the singer would fully cooperate with the tax department.
