No equivalent of conservative fascism

Letter February 03, 2011
There is no liberal equivalent of the conservative fascism that is currently being unleashed upon people.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Daniyal Noorani’s article of February 1 titled “Finding a common ground”. One cannot compare those who behead people to someone who stood up for the poorest of the poor. How many people from the ‘elite’ die in suicide bombings? Peshawar’s Qissa Khwani Bazar is not exactly a place where the elite hang out.

Is Aasia Bibi part of the elite? Are all those who are victims of the blasphemy law part of the elite? Yet only the liberal left condemns these killings openly, for which politicians from the left have paid in their own blood.

We should snap out of this haves-versus-the-have-nots debate. There is no liberal equivalent of the conservative fascism that is currently being unleashed upon people, regardless of their financial status, be it Salmaan Taseer or Aasia Bibi.
