Muslim feminist rips apart 'biased' Hollywood in viral video

We (Hollywood) have no problem finding brown actors to play the roles of terrorists

Amani Al-Khatatbeh, editor-in-chief, MuslimGirl.com has been called a media titan by The New York Times. This media analyst recently addressed some pertinent issues -- such as the need for diversity in Hollywood -- and her comments are now going viral.

During a panel discussion at The White House’s first United State of Women Summit, Al-Khatahtbeh was asked, “How do we empower the people we call the voiceless?”

Her simple answer to that was, “Pass the mic.”

“One of the most important things for us to do to amplify those voices is to pass the mic whenever we have it,” the writer said at the summit. “If there’s someone that can speak to a lived experience that you cannot, do not take up that space, do not speak on their behalf, let them speak for themselves.”

The MuslimGirl.com founder explained media bias by giving the example of an upcoming biopic on Rumi. She discussed how Rumi was born in Afghanistan but instead of picking someone of colour, the screenwriter and producer want Leonardo DiCaprio to play the part.

"When you think about it, when we have roles in Hollywood, in television, in the media, that have to do with terrorists, that have to do with villains, that have to do with people that want to destroy us, that hate our freedoms, we have absolutely no problem finding brown actors to play those roles.,” she said.



This short clip of Amani Al Khatahtbeh's statements has gone viral on social media, earning more than 1.2 million views in four days.
