Inconvenienced: Damaged drainage pipe irks residents

Peshawar Municipal Services urged to take action

PESHAWAR: Residents of Sabz Pir Road in the city took to the streets on Friday against the accumulation of stagnant water that flowed onto the streets from a damaged drainage pipeline. The pipeline was recently constructed by Peshawar Municipal Services in Lahori Gate.

The protesters accused the municipal services of using substandard material to construct the pipeline.

Many of them said 40-year-old drainage pipelines were functioning properly in their villages. However, this newly-constructed pipeline was damaged as soon as it was constructed.

Ansar Abbas, a local, told The Express Tribune the problem has persisted for several days and residents had registered a complaint. However, the authorities had failed to resolve the matter.

“This is a major problem because water is now on the streets since the newly-constructed pipeline has been damaged,” he added. “The old pipeline was working properly but the municipal services had replaced it with a new one that is creating problems for us.”

He added the contaminated water from the streets was also pouring into the houses and mosques.  “Many people were inconvenienced by the water that accumulated on the streets, especially as they went to the mosque for Friday prayers,” he said.
