Stringent measures: NAP hovers like a dark cloud over terrorism

Besides 847 militants, those keeping poor security at businesses also nabbed

PESHAWAR: Raids have not only been carried out under the National Action Plan (NAP) to arrest militants. The police have also arrested those who have failed to protect schools and hotels across the province in view of the security situation.

As per the data, a series of checks and balances have been put into place to prevent hate material from being disseminated.

Since NAP was introduced to root out terrorism, its main achievement so far can be considered the 524 terrorism cases that the police have traced successfully.

In addition, 847 militants have been booked and interrogation has been completed. A final report has been submitted to the courts along with complete case files. According to the data, the arrests have been made in the 20,306 search and strike operations which the police and security forces have conducted across the province since the inception of NAP.

During these operations, 1,464 kilogrammes of explosives, 22,974 arms and 762,244 rounds of ammunitions have also been seized.

Moreover, 5,362 people have been put on Schedule-IV of the anti-terrorism act by the counter-terrorism department. They have been kept under strict observation.

From all sides

In what appears to be a bid to prevent locals from getting into the folds of intolerance, the police have seized 1,096 hate materials and arrested 220 people who were spreading hatred. At least 2,515 people have been arrested for the misuse of loudspeakers across the province and 2,452 cases have been registered in this regard.

The crackdown against unregistered Afghan refugees has continued at an unprecedented rate. Till date, 29,720 Afghan nationals have been arrested for illegally residing in the country.

At least 950 people have been booked for attesting the documents and CNIC forms of Afghan nationals, because the move has helped the latter illegally obtain CNICs. Around 2,173 Afghan nationals have been arrested and booked for obtaining CNICs.

In addition, 210 touts have been arrested and an FIR has been registered against them for helping Afghan nationals get CNICs.

Security check

Police have registered 7,091 FIRs against the administration of education institutes for taking inadequate security arrangements, 389 FIRs against bus terminals, 12 FIRs against cinema owners and 3,000 FIRs against other building owners over lack of security.

By the same token, 2,381 FIRs have been registered against those hotel managers who have not verified their guests. At least 17,291 people have been arrested and booked for not submitting their Tenants Information Forms (TIF).

During the search and strike operations, 476,904 houses were searched and checked and 80,636 snap checking points were also established.

While talking to The Express Tribune, a police official said these search and strike operations were really important because they increase the efficiency of police and also put pressure on the anti-social elements. He said for the first time in the history of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa action had been taken against those who facilitated Afghan nationals in obtaining fake CNICs as well as those involved in hate speech.
