Dr Asim’s mother wants PEMRA to disallow airing of confessional videos
SHC dismisses urgent hearing application on power of attorney issue
KARACHI:
After a second video statement of former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain appeared in the media, his mother approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) for directions to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to stop news channels from airing the leaked videos.
Dr Ijaz Fatima, who cited the Pemra chairperson as a respondent, said a video regarding a statement of Dr Asim was leaked and shown on various new TV channels. The petitioner said she had already expressed her apprehension that such video statements might be leaked in the media. She pleaded the court issue directives to Pemra to restrain the TV channels from airing further leaked videos.
Urgent hearing application
Meanwhile, a division bench dismissed an application seeking an urgent hearing on Dr Asim's petition regarding attestation of his power of attorney.
Dr Asim was drugged or forced to confess against Owais Muzaffar: lawyer
In the petition, Dr Asim said he wanted to give his power of attorney to his son Ammad, who is a Canadian national, in respect of the Zia Medical Centre and his declared bank accounts in Dubai.
In his request, he mentioned that he was shifted to the camp office of the ministry of foreign affairs in Karachi, where he executed power of attorney in favour of his son in the presence of the competent authority. However, the officials at the foreign affairs ministry office refused to attest it.
Dr Asim said the officials informed him that there were various cases pending against him with the National Accountability Bureau and the anti-terrorism court therefore attesting such power of attorney would affect the cases.
He sought direction for the foreign affairs ministry authorities to attest and authenticate the power of attorney so that it could take effect. Advocate Umaima appeared on behalf of Advocate Anwar Mansoor Khan, who was on general adjournment.
During the hearing, SHC Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah dismissed the urgent application, asking Advocate Umaima to first get general adjournment of Advocate Khan cancelled.
