KARACHI: All deputy commissioners of the city are to keep school buildings on standby to deal with any emergency situation due to heavy rainfall, ordered Karachi commissioner Ejaz Ahmed Khan on Wednesday.

The commissioner has also ordered that all machinery for drainage of underpasses be kept on standby. In a meeting regarding expected heavy rainfall in the city, he ordered the cleaning of all nullahs on an emergency basis. "Special drainage arrangements must be made for the roads that usually get inundated with rainwater," he said.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator Laeeq Ahmed briefed the members of the meeting that the orders for cleaning the four big nullahs of the city will be issued soon. Karachi Water and Sewerage Board managing director Misbahuddin Farid said that generators have been installed in all their pumping stations and the Clifton pumping station has been updated.
