KARACHI: Rangers claim to have arrested eight political workers for their involvement in target killings and extortion during ongoing targeted raids and operations in the metropolis on Wednesday. Two more target killers affiliated with a banned outfit were also apprehended.

According to a Rangers spokesperson, the eight suspects were arrested during targeted raids conducted in different parts of the city, including Ranchore Lane, Kharadar and Baldia Town. He added that the suspects are affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. "Four target killers, three extortionists and a weapon handler of [the party's] militant wing were among the arrested," said the spokesperson. A large amount of weapons, including one uni-barrel rocket launcher, a small machinegun, four pistols, 24 fitrana books and 2,070 ammunitions, were recovered from their possession. The spokesperson further said that two more target killers affiliated with a banned outfit were arrested during a targeted raid in Orangi Town. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning.

Meanwhile, two suspected criminals were killed during an alleged encounter with the police in Ganna Market, Sohrab Goth.

The suspects were killed during an encounter when the police tried to intercept the two suspects riding a motorcycle during routine checking, said the police, adding that the suspects opened fire and tried to escape. The police retaliated and killed both the suspects. They also claim to have recovered weapons and stolen mobile phones. The bodies were shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth after medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
