Vehicular pollution in Punjab

Letter June 11, 2016
It is unfortunate that the metropolis of Lahore was recently declared one of the most polluted cities in the world

TURBAT: Punjab’s Environment Protection Department (EPD) has failed to eradicate or even improve upon the state of vehicular pollution in the province, where it has become a serious threat to health. It is unfortunate that the metropolis of Lahore was recently declared one of the most polluted cities in the world.

On my recent visit to the province, I was appalled to see the situation on the roads — from toxic fumes to the multitude of vehicles jamming roads, it was anything but pleasant.

Toxic smoke emitted by vehicles is causing airborne diseases and there is a danger of premature deaths, affecting thousands of people in Punjab. The shabby auto-rickshaws, motorcycle-rickshaws, buses, trucks and other automobiles are creating a toxic environment for people in which it is difficult to survive.

The EDP has clearly failed to launch any kind of campaign to control this deadly pollution. I would like to request the Punjab government to take initiative and order the police to eradicate vehicular pollution in the province for the safety of people.
