MONTREAL, CANADA: Two teenage girls, including a visiting German student, died Friday when they were struck by a freight train in Canada's Atlantic coast province of Nova Scotia, police said.

The accident occurred at 1:40am (0440 GMT) in Lantz, 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Halifax.

Both the 17-year-old local resident and 18-year-old exchange student from Germany were pronounced dead at the scene, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

Initial reports indicate the pair were on the tracks when they were hit by a passing train.
